About GIRAF / Quickdraw
GIRAF (Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival) is an international festival of independent and experimental animation presented annually by Quickdraw Animation. The Festival takes place the first week of November at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We are currently entering our 5th year of the festival. GIRAF celebrates the spirit of independent and underground animation, showcasing animators from across Canada and around the Globe. GIRAF is the only exclusively independent animation festival in Canada, with a hands-on approach, focusing on process and experimentation.
We program feature, short length, and artist spotlights each year, as well as workshops, panel discussions and kids programs. Every year we seek out independent short animation submissions for competition in the festival. We are also interested in presenting performance, installation and new media projects, which bridge disciplines of animation with new forms of contemporary art.
