24 MEMES PER SECOND
LIVE ON ZOOM | NOV. 24, 7PM MST
FREE, ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED
Memes have come a long way in their short lifespan, starting as a natural extension of the democratized interconnectivity of the early internet in the form of lighthearted images from popular media to today with their complete ubiquity in culture, driving political discourse, spreading information, and being recognized by art institutions globally. Memes are the dominant visual media of our time, packing entire schools of thought and critical debate into single images with a few lines of text. The power of memes are their ability to maintain impact despite the remixing of their information. They can be relatable to anyone, and anyone can make one.
The interplay between broadly recognizable type-sets and highly personalized outputs allows niche communities to form. It’s in this milieu that four experimental animation nerds began making and sending each other memes about their favorite films or personal qualms with the animation industry. Deciding to take the memes public birthed the page 24memespersecond, and almost immediately a community began to form around it. Blending historical information, political and social critique, and personal introspection about the field, the page has struck a chord with the experimental animation community around the world.
The admins of the page want to invite you to an interactive meme-making workshop where they will make memes from imagery generously given by filmmakers featured in GIRAF this year. Through a few participatory games, you’ll have the chance to suggest jokes, quips, and critiques to be used in brand new memes. So, please join the admin of 24memespersecond in this unique workshop to spread some animation love and put your meme skills to the test.
Please note: As this is a live event, closed-captioning will not be provided.
