CANADIAN SHOWCASE

What does Canadian animation look like? If the films we found this year are any indication, there’s really no good answer. From Emily Pelstrings spectral visions to Thomas Corriveau’s surrealist storytelling, Terri Lemire-Wilson’s punchy visuals, and Shawna Koski’s aspirational gourds, there’s no single theme to pull these films together. Those disparate identities are at the heart of Terril Calder’s powerful, politically charged Meneath: The Hidden Island of Ethics, which ends the pack on a challenging note, forcing us to confront the consequences of “Canadian” identity, and to ask where we go from here.
