GRAPHITE! ANIMATED TRACES
NOV 19 5:00PM - 7:00PM
This special programme is dedicated to animated shorts that embrace graphite as a vibrant collaborator. This project is curated by Alla Gadassik with the support of Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
Through animation, graphite comes to life as a hard-edged medium of incisive social commentary and a fluid material for diving into the subconscious. As it leaves traces on each canvas it caresses, graphite also activates the screen as a tactile surface of light and shadow. Guest curator Alla Gadassik will introduce the screening. The post-screening discussion will feature artist Cam Kletke, whose film You Feel Soft (2022) will premiere as part of this programme. Animation fans, drawing enthusiasts, and doodlers are especially welcome!
Alla Gadassik is a media scholar, curator, and educator. Her work explores the history of different animation methods and philosophies. Her recent article "Homeworkers", published in the journal Feminist Media Histories (and available on her website www.gadassik.com) is a love letter to independent animation. Alla currently lives, works, and commits to anticolonial efforts on the unceded lands of Coast Salish people, also known as Vancouver, Canada. She is an associate professor at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, where she founded the Animate Materials Workshop.
