Still from MEET ME UNDER THE CLOCK
This workshop will contain a mix of theoretical and hands-on education, with a discussion of the importance of sharing stories through the medium of education, along with an exploration on the unique storytelling techniques provided by shadow-puppet animation. Working with Calgary-specific queer history stories provided by historian Kevin Allen of the Calgary Gay History project, workshop participants will create looping animations that will be shared by Quickdraw Animation and the Calgary Queer Arts Society
We're thrilled to have Lauren and Sonya taking part in our opening screening, On LGTBQ2S+ Animation. We'll be sharing their three collaborations together as MidKnife Films, along with a selection of contemporary queer animation from creators around the world.
Attendees will also have the chance to pick up a free copy of Quickdraw's new publication, On LGBTQ2S+ Animation, collecting essays and comics from queer writers exploring issues around representation and creation in animated films.
We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts in this publication and this screening.
MIDKNIFE FILMS is an artist collective dedicated to making short films using the low-tech magic of shadow puppetry to tell untold stories of marginalized communities in creative, informative and aesthetically beautiful ways. Their films illustrate forgotten moments from Toronto’s queer past, using shadow puppets because so little early LGBTQ history is visually documented - they are creating a visual record where there is none.
They have screened and won awards at LGBTQ and social justice festivals worldwide, including Canada, United States, England, Belgium, Australia and South Korea.
