DIR. Kenji Iwaisawa
Bored with picking fights and skipping school, and with nothing better to do, three teenagers decide to start a band. Despite a complete lack of musical skill, experience or ambition, their simple sounds strike a chord.
Although its story is small in scale and told with plenty of deadpan humour, On-Gaku perfectly captures the feeling of creating music for its own sake, and the joy of making noise. Mixing mumblecore moods with a shifting animation stale, the result is a wildly original, trailblazing anime based on the Manga by Hiroyuki Ohashi. The film’s animation technique evolves as the story does, culminating in a rock ‘n’ roll spectacle for the ears and the eyes.
Winner of the Grand Prize for Feature Animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival: "For being a triumph of economic storytelling without sacrificing the richness of its characters. We were particularly impressed with the perfect timing, the simplicity of design, and the joyous celebration of the medium of animation.”
